R1SE needs a certain number of kids in order to break even, but Szafranski said aside from that, it’s “more about impact.” There are roughly 35 teachers in both locations that can “flow back and forth,” if needed. Some students, however, need more one-on-one attention, while others can work fine on their own with little tutor involvement. The organization aims to have around five students to one teacher, Szafranski explained. “We could double our number of kids, but we would lose what makes R1SE special,” he said. What capacity means for R1SE isn’t just how many students can fit into the building, but also how many tutors are available, he said. The center is filling up "very quickly" and could be at capacity soon. R1SE recently had "three straight consecutive weeks" of new registrations, Szafranski said. It’s somebody else saying, ‘Hey, this really changed my life in a positive way.’” “Our best advertising is when we exceed expectations, kids are thriving and the parents’ lives are easier,” Szafranski said. He preferred to let the word spread naturally and let the center's work speak for itself. While the organization was approached with advertising opportunities, he declined to take them. “It’s building those relationships and getting kids to be more confident with themselves, being able to socialize with other kids and problem-solve.”Ĭoming from the original location in Freeland, it took time for word about the Midland location to spread, R1SE founder Trevor Szafranski said. “It’s not always getting kids to sit down and do the A’s and B’s, the 1’s and 2’s,” Midland R1SE Director Nick Horn explained.
